Where an aluminum fence fits

It is an open fence. You can see through it, so it marks a line and holds a pet without closing in the yard.

The front yard

Four feet tall along the street, with a walk gate. The one fence style many HOAs allow in front of the house.

A dog run

Keeps the dog in and the view open. Puppy-picket panels close the gaps along the bottom for a small dog.

The pool area

Pool-style panels with closer pickets, and gates that close and latch on their own. Rules differ by town, so check yours first.

A lake or golf lot

Where the view is the point, a black aluminum fence almost disappears against the trees and water.

Around a patio or garden

A short run to mark the edge, with a gate to the yard, without the weight of a privacy fence.

Along a brick wall or hedge

A line of pickets on top of a low wall, or in front of a hedge that does the privacy work.

Wood, vinyl and aluminum fences comparedThree fence sections side by side: wood privacy, white vinyl privacy and black aluminum pickets, with rows saying which give privacy, which need paint or stain and which can rot or rust.WoodVinylAluminumPrivacyYesYesNo, openPaintEvery few yearsNeverNeverRot or rustCan rotNoNo rust
The three materials we quote. Wood gives the most looks for the money and needs care; vinyl and aluminum never need paint; aluminum is open, so it is for looks, pets and pools, not privacy.

What you give up, what you get

You give up privacy. An aluminum fence is pickets with gaps, so it does not hide the yard, block a neighbor's view or stop the wind. If privacy is the point, look at wood or vinyl.

You get a fence that does not rot, rust, warp or need paint, that follows a slope without stepped gaps, and that comes apart panel by panel if one piece ever gets bent. Powder-coated black and bronze keep their color for years in our sun.

Grades matter. A residential grade panel is right for a yard. A heavier commercial grade is for a wider gate, a taller fence, or a run where a mower or a car might bump it. We name the grade in the quote.

Aluminum fence pricing

A new aluminum fence is $66 to $80 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Your written quote comes from your photos and the layout.

Length and height

Longer runs cost less per foot. A 4 foot front-yard fence costs less per foot than a 5 or 6 foot one.

Grade and style

Commercial grade, spear tops, puppy pickets and pool-style panels cost more than a flat-top residential panel.

Gates

Each gate is its own post pair and hardware. A self-closing pool gate or a wide double gate costs more than a walk gate.

The site

Slope is easy for aluminum, but roots, rock, a tight side yard and removing an old fence all add work.

North Carolina projects of $40,000 or more are contracted through our licensed general contractor partner. South Carolina projects over $5,000 go through our licensed partner too. See the cost page.

How a new aluminum fence goes

1

Send photos and the layout for a free written quote

A few photos of the yard, the rough length of each run, the height, the style and color, and where the gates go. We send a written quote with the exact panel named.

2

HOA yes, 811 marked, exact sizes confirmed

You get the HOA approval in writing, we help with the drawing. We call 811 so the utilities are marked. On the first work day we confirm the exact sizes and the line on site.

3

Posts set in concrete, panels racked to the slope

Posts set plumb in concrete in a straight line. Aluminum panels pivot at the rails, so they follow a slope without stepped gaps along the bottom.

4

Gates, caps, clean-up

Gates hung on their own posts, self-closing hinges and a latch where you want them, post caps on, debris hauled away. We walk the fence with you.

For a new fence we need each straight run in feet (A, B, C), the height and style, and where the gates go. Close is fine: we confirm the exact sizes on site after you say yes.

Pools, the HOA, the county and 811

A fence around a pool is a barrier, and barriers have their own rules: the height, the size of the gaps between pickets and under the bottom rail, and a gate that closes and latches on its own with the latch out of a child's reach. The rules differ by town and county. Check with yours before you order, and tell us it is a pool fence so we quote the pool-style panels and hardware. For a frameless glass pool fence, see our sister company Carolina Glass Railing.

The per-foot price for 4 and 5-foot aluminum, the gate price and a worked example are in the fence cost per foot guide.

Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence goes up. Ask early, get the yes in writing before the first post is set. We help with the drawing. Read our HOA fence approval guide.

Permits, setbacks and the height you may build to depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811, so the gas, water and cable lines are marked for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an aluminum fence cost?
A new aluminum fence is $66 to $80 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Send photos of the yard, the rough length of each run, the height and the style, and we send a free written quote. The grade of the aluminum, the height, the number of gates and the slope of the yard are what move the price.
Aluminum or wrought iron?
They look alike from the street. Wrought iron is steel: heavier, stronger, and it rusts unless it is repainted. Aluminum does not rust, needs no paint, weighs less, and its powder coat keeps its color. For a home fence, aluminum gives the iron look without the upkeep. For a security fence that must stop a car, steel.
Will it keep my dog in?
A standard picket spacing keeps most dogs in. For a small dog or a puppy, a "puppy picket" panel adds closer pickets along the bottom. Aluminum does not give a dog anything to chew, and it does not rot where the dog digs.
Can I use it around a pool?
Aluminum is a common pool fence, and pool-style panels are made for it. The rules on barrier height, picket gaps and self-closing, self-latching gates differ by town and county, so check yours before you order. For a frameless glass pool fence, our sister company installs those.
Do I need HOA approval or a permit?
Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence, and aluminum picket is often the one style they allow in a front yard. Most ask for a plan with the fence line, height, style and gate. We help with that drawing. Permits and setbacks depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811 so the utilities are marked for free.
Can you fix a bent aluminum fence section?
Yes. A bent rail or picket, a panel knocked loose from its post, or a leaning post is a repair visit, $225 to $600, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Aluminum panels come apart, so one bent piece is replaced without touching the rest. Send a photo of the damage and one of a post top so we can match the style.
