What we fix

Send a photo of the problem and we tell you which of these it is and what it costs.

Leaning posts

A post that rotted at the base, lost its footing, or was set too shallow. We dig it out, set a new ground-contact post in fresh concrete, and plumb it.

Rotted and broken boards

Pickets that split, warped or rotted from ground contact. We pull the bad boards and fit matching replacements.

Loose rails

Rails that cracked, pulled loose from the post, or sag under the weight of the pickets. We replace the rail and refasten the boards.

Sagging gates

Gates that drag, will not latch or racked out of square. Re-hung, braced the right way, new hinges and latch. Gate repair has the details.

Storm damage

Fallen branches, wind-snapped posts and blown-out panels. We clear the debris and replace what broke. See storm damage repair.

HOA letters

Got a letter about your fence? We repair to match the existing style, height and material, and you get the finished result to send back to the HOA.

How we set a post so it stays put

The reason a post fails is water. A post that stands in wet clay, or in concrete that holds water like a cup, rots at the ground line in a few years. So the fix is not just a new post. It is a new post set the right way.

We dig out the old footing, put gravel at the bottom of the hole so the post end drains, set a ground-contact rated post, and fill with concrete crowned at the top so rain runs away from the wood. Then we plumb it and reattach the rails and the boards that are still good.

A post set in concrete needs time to cure before it carries the panels. That is why a post replacement can mean a second short visit the next day. We tell you in the quote.

The top of the concrete is rounded so water runs away from the post.Depth below grounddepends on height and soilConcrete crownedso water runs offGravel at the bottomso the post end drainsGround-contact posttreated for burial
How we set a post: gravel at the bottom so the post end drains, concrete crowned at the top so water runs off. Depth depends on the fence height and the soil.

Fence repair pricing

One honest range, $225 to $600 per repair visit, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Where your repair lands inside it depends on three things.

Low end

A few boards or pickets

Broken or rotted boards swapped for matching ones. No digging, one visit.

Middle

A post, or a gate

A leaning post dug out and reset in new concrete, or a gate re-hung with new hardware.

High end

A whole section

Posts, rails and pickets rebuilt between two posts, after a storm or an impact.

Several repairs in the same visit are quoted as one job. Staining or sealing is quoted separately if you ask. See the cost page.

Repair or replace: the three in ten rule of thumbA row of ten fence posts with three marked bad. Text explains that up to about three bad posts in ten are repaired, and that more than that is when a rebuild starts to make more sense.XXX3 bad posts out of 10: repair the threeMore than about 3 in 10 rotten: a rebuild starts to make more senseA rule of thumb, not a law. We tell you which side your fence is on.
Our rule of thumb from the photos: up to about three bad posts in ten, repair. More than that, and a rebuild often costs less over the years. We say which side your fence is on in the written quote.

When a repair is the wrong answer

We would rather fix three posts than sell you a fence. But when most of the posts are soft at the ground line, fixing them one at a time costs more over the years than a rebuild, and the fence never looks right.

Our rule of thumb from your photos: up to about three bad posts in ten, repair. More than that, we quote both ways and tell you which one we would choose for our own yard. Read the full repair or replace guide.

How a repair goes

1

Send photos for a free written quote

Send photos of the full fence line, any leaning posts, the broken boards and the gate hardware, plus the length of the damaged section. We send a written quote from them. If your project needs a visit before we can price it, we tell you up front, before anyone drives out.

2

We get the materials and set the day

We source matching lumber, hardware and concrete, and put the work day in writing.

3

We fix it and clean up

We replace the damaged posts, boards or hardware, set new posts in concrete footings, and haul away the debris. Simple repairs close out in one visit. Post replacements may need a next-day return after the concrete cures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a fence repair cost?
Most repair visits run $225 to $600, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. A few broken pickets are at the low end. A leaning post reset in new concrete, or a full section rebuilt between two posts, is higher. Several repairs in the same visit are quoted as one job. Send photos and we quote the exact number in writing before any work starts.
Can you match the wood on my fence?
For pressure-treated pine, yes. We use boards in the same nominal sizes (1x6 dog-ear, 1x4 picket, 4x4 post) so the profile matches. New boards are lighter in color for a few months until they weather to match. If you plan to stain, stain the repaired section plus a full panel on each side so the color blends.
My fence leans. Does the whole thing need to go?
Usually not. A leaning fence is almost always a post problem: the post rotted at ground level, the footing cracked, or the post was set too shallow. We replace the failed posts, set them in new concrete and reattach the rails and boards. The rest stays. If more than about three posts in ten are rotten, a rebuild starts to make more sense, and we tell you.
Do I need a permit to repair a fence?
Replacing boards, fixing a gate or securing a loose rail usually does not need a permit. Replacing many posts or rebuilding whole sections can, in some towns, especially on a property line. The county or town has the final word, so we tell you to check with them when a repair gets that big.
How soon can you fix it?
Most repairs are scheduled 6 to 10 days after you accept the quote. The exact day goes in writing.
Can you fix a vinyl or aluminum fence too?
Yes. Vinyl pickets, rails and posts are replaced with matching parts, and aluminum sections and posts the same way. Send a photo of the damage and a close-up of a rail end, so we can see the profile before we quote.
