What Davidson does to a fence

Davidson is built around the college and the old Main Street, and the houses on the streets around it have front yards with low wood picket fences, often painted, often older than the people who own them now. A picket fence lives at the sidewalk, where every root, mower and delivery cart finds it. The pickets get knocked loose and the posts, set long ago and shallow, lean toward the street.

Out on the edges, toward Davidson-Concord Road and the lake, the town has grown new neighborhoods with 6 foot privacy fences in back and HOAs that keep them matching. Those fences went into the same clay at the same time, so when posts start to rot at the ground line, several houses on the street notice in the same year.

We are about an hour from Davidson, so we take larger fence projects here: a picket fence rebuilt along a whole frontage, a row of posts reset on a long privacy run, or a new fence in one of the newer neighborhoods. A single picket is not a trip we can make work, and we tell you that straight when you send the photos.

Fences that fit the town

Davidson cares how the street looks, and so do its residents. We match the picket profile, the spacing and the height that is there, and we quote a new fence that fits the town rules before you take it to the planning office.

Larger projects, about an hour out

A whole frontage, a long run of posts, or a new fence: we group it into one or two work days and put them in the written quote.

Permits, design rules and HOA approval in Davidson

The Town of Davidson handles its own zoning and planning, and its planning rules go further than most towns on how a fence looks from the street: height, how open it is, and where it can sit. Mecklenburg County handles building permits and inspections. A repair that matches what is there usually needs nothing. A new fence, especially at the front, needs a conversation with the town planning office first. They have the final word.

The older in-town streets mostly have no HOA. The newer neighborhoods on the edges do, and their rules sit on top of the town's. So check with your HOA before a new fence or a visible repair, send them a plan with the fence line, height, style and gate, and get the yes in writing. We help with that drawing. Our HOA fence guide covers what to send.

Before we dig for a new fence we call 811, so the gas, water and cable lines are marked for free. On the old in-town lots the lines are not always where you expect, so we wait for the marks before the first hole.

Frequently Asked Questions

Davidson has strict rules about how things look. Does that cover fences?
Yes. The Town of Davidson has its own planning and design rules, and they say a lot about what a fence near the street can look like: height, openness and sometimes material. A low open picket is the usual answer in town; a tall solid fence at the sidewalk often is not. Ask the town planning office before you plan a new front fence. They have the final word.
Can you rebuild a picket fence to look like the one that was there?
Yes. We take a close-up of a picket, the rail and the post cap from your photos and match the profile, the spacing and the height. On the older streets near the college that is the whole point of the job: a new fence that looks like it has always been there.
We only have a couple of broken pickets. Will you come out for that?
Davidson is about an hour from our base, so a job that small is hard to make work for either side, and we say so. We take larger fence projects in Davidson: a run of posts, storm damage across sections, or a new fence. Send the photos anyway. If it is small, we tell you honestly and you can call someone closer.
Do the newer neighborhoods on the edge of town have the same rules?
They have the town rules plus their own HOA. The subdivisions off Davidson-Concord Road and toward Highway 73 usually have a list of approved fence styles and colors. Check with your HOA and the town both, get the answers in writing, and we quote a fence that fits both lists.
