What a fence costs, in plain words

A fence repair is $225 to $600 per repair visit, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. New fences: wood $35 to $42 per linear foot, vinyl $69 to $76 per linear foot, aluminum $66 to $80 per linear foot, installed, plus tax. The written quote is free and comes from your photos, with no visit.

Fence repair: one range, three levels

Every repair visit is $225 to $600, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Where yours lands depends on how much digging there is.

Low end

Boards and hardware

A few broken pickets or rotted boards swapped for matching ones. New hinges and a latch on a gate that still hangs square. A rail refastened to its post. No digging, one visit.

Middle

A post, or a gate

A leaning post dug out and reset in new concrete, with the rails and boards reattached. A gate re-hung and braced, or a new hinge post. Often a short second visit after the concrete cures.

High end

A whole section

Posts, rails and pickets rebuilt between two posts after a storm, a fallen tree or a car. Built to match the rest of the fence.

What moves a repair price

  • How many posts. Each post is a hole, a bag of concrete and a return visit. Three posts in one visit cost less than three visits.
  • The material. Vinyl and aluminum parts have to match a profile. Treated pine is on every lumber yard shelf.
  • Access. A fence against a shed, a hedge or a neighbor's fence takes longer to work on.
  • Extras you ask for. Staining, a new cap board along a run, or a self-closing gate are quoted as their own lines.

When more than about three posts in ten are bad, we quote a rebuild beside the repair. Read repair or replace.

Repair or replace: the three in ten rule of thumbA row of ten fence posts with three marked bad. Text explains that up to about three bad posts in ten are repaired, and that more than that is when a rebuild starts to make more sense.XXX3 bad posts out of 10: repair the threeMore than about 3 in 10 rotten: a rebuild starts to make more senseA rule of thumb, not a law. We tell you which side your fence is on.
Our rule of thumb from the photos: up to about three bad posts in ten, repair. More than that, and a rebuild often costs less over the years. We say which side your fence is on in the written quote.

New fences

Per-foot ranges for the materials we have published, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. What moves them, the gate prices and a worked example are in the fence cost per foot guide.

New fence prices by material
Material Price
New wood fence $35 to $42 per linear foot, installed, plus tax
New vinyl fence $69 to $76 per linear foot, installed, plus tax
New aluminum fence $66 to $80 per linear foot, installed, plus tax

What moves a new fence price

Length

Longer runs cost less per foot: the gates, corners and setup are spread over more fence.

Height

A 6 foot fence uses more board and more post in the ground than a 4 foot one.

Style

Shadowbox uses nearly twice the boards of privacy. Lattice tops, caps and spear tops add material.

Gates

Each gate is built and hung by hand on its own posts. A double gate for a mower or a car costs more than a walk gate.

Corners and ends

Every corner and every end needs an extra post set in concrete.

Slope

A sloped yard means stepped or racked panels, which take more cutting and more time.

The old fence

Taking down and hauling away an old fence is its own line in the quote.

Access

Roots, rock, a tight side yard or no place to park a truck near the line all add hours.

For a new fence we need each straight run in feet (A, B, C), the height and style, and where the gates go. Close is fine: we confirm the exact sizes on site after you say yes.

Things that are not on the price list

The HOA. Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence goes up, and some before a visible repair. We help with the drawing they ask for. Get the yes in writing before the first post is set.

811. Before we dig for a new fence we call 811, so the utilities are marked. It is free in NC and SC, and it is not optional.

Permits and setbacks. They depend on your county or town, and the county or town has the final word. A repair that keeps the same fence in the same place usually needs nothing.

Bigger projects. North Carolina projects of $40,000 or more are contracted through our licensed general contractor partner. South Carolina projects over $5,000 go through our licensed partner too. We never claim a license we do not hold.

Pool barriers. Height, gaps and self-closing gates differ by town. For a frameless glass pool fence, see our sister company Carolina Glass Railing.

What we need for an exact number

How to measure a fence line: measure each straight run, note the height, count the gates, then text two or three photos

Measure it yourself in 5 minutes

Just a tape measure. Text us the sizes and two or three photos, and we send you a free written quote. If you say yes, we confirm the exact sizes on site as part of the job.

  1. Measure each straight run. Walk the line where the fence is or will go. Measure corner to corner in feet and call the runs A, B, C. You do not need to plan posts or panels; we lay those out.
  2. Note the height and style. Is it 4 feet or 6 feet tall? Privacy boards, pickets with gaps, or rails? For a new fence, tell us the style you want.
  3. Count the gates. How many gates, and how wide each opening is. A single walk gate is usually 3 to 4 feet; a double gate for a mower or a car is wider.
  4. For a repair, count the damage. How many posts lean, how many boards are broken, and how long the damaged section is. Close is fine.
  5. Take two or three photos. One of the whole fence line from a few steps back, one close-up of the damage or of the ground where the new fence goes, and one of the gate if you have one.
  6. Send it for a free written quote. Text the sizes and photos to (704) 750-9173 or upload them on our photo quote page. We send a free written quote. After you say yes, we confirm the exact sizes on site as part of the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence post?
A post dug out and reset in new concrete lands in the middle of the repair range, $225 to $600 per repair visit, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Two or three posts in the same visit are quoted as one job, which costs less than three separate visits.
Is the written quote really free?
Yes. You send two or three photos and the rough sizes, and we send a written quote at no cost and with no obligation. We do not drive out to quote. If your project needs a visit before we can price it, we tell you up front, before anyone drives out.
How much is a new fence per foot?
Wood privacy is $35 to $42 per linear foot, installed, plus tax; vinyl privacy is $69 to $76 per linear foot, installed, plus tax; aluminum is $66 to $80 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. The top of each range includes removing and hauling the old fence. Gates are priced each. The full breakdown with a worked example is in our fence cost per foot guide.
What does "confirmed after the final measure" mean?
Your written quote is built from your photos and your rough sizes. On the first work day we measure the exact sizes on site. If they match what you sent, the price stands. If the fence line is longer or there is more damage than the photos showed, we tell you before we start, never after.
Do you charge for travel?
Our published service area, from south Charlotte to Fort Mill and Union County, is quoted with no travel line. For larger projects farther out, such as Lake Norman, we say in the written quote whether travel is included.
Is tax included?
No. Every price on this site is installed, plus tax. The written quote shows the tax as its own line so the total is clear before you say yes.
