Four styles, one way of building them

The boards change. The posts, the concrete and the care do not.

Privacy

Boards side by side on two or three rails, usually 6 feet tall, with dog-ear or flat tops. A cap board along the top keeps rain off the picket ends. The most common fence behind a house here.

Shadowbox

Boards on both sides of the rails, offset, so the fence looks the same from both yards and lets air through. A good answer when the HOA wants the "good side" to face the neighbor.

Picket

Spaced pickets with pointed or rounded tops, 3 to 4 feet tall, for a front yard or a garden. Keeps a dog in and the view open.

Split rail and post and rail

Two or three rails between posts, no pickets, for a large lot, a pasture or a property line. Wire mesh can be added on the inside to hold a dog.

What makes a wood fence last here

Our clay holds water and our summers are wet, so a wood fence fails at the ground, not in the air. Every choice we make is about keeping the wood out of standing water.

  • Posts rated for ground contact, set on gravel so the end drains, in concrete crowned so water runs away.
  • A kickboard along the bottom takes the ground contact so the pickets do not have to.
  • A cap board along the top covers the end grain of every picket, where water soaks in fastest.
  • Exterior screws or ring-shank nails, so the boards do not work loose as the wood moves.

Wood fence pricing

A new wood fence is $35 to $42 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Your written quote comes from your photos and the layout.

Length and height

Longer runs cost less per foot. A 6 foot privacy fence uses more wood and more post than a 4 foot picket.

Style and wood

Shadowbox uses nearly twice the boards of privacy. Cedar costs more than treated pine.

Gates and corners

Each gate is built and hung by hand. Each corner and each end needs an extra post.

The site

Slope, roots, rock, a tight side yard, and taking out an old fence all add work.

North Carolina projects of $40,000 or more are contracted through our licensed general contractor partner. South Carolina projects over $5,000 go through our licensed partner too. See the cost page.

How a new wood fence goes

1

Send photos and the layout for a free written quote

A few photos of the yard, the rough length of each run in feet, the height, the style and where the gates go. We send a written quote. If your project needs a visit before we can price it, we tell you up front, before anyone drives out.

2

HOA yes, 811 marked, exact sizes confirmed

You get the HOA approval in writing, we help with the drawing. We call 811 so the utilities are marked. On the first work day we confirm the exact sizes and the line on site.

3

Posts set in concrete

Ground-contact posts on gravel, in concrete crowned to shed water, set plumb and in a straight line. The concrete cures before the panels go on.

4

Rails, pickets, gates, clean-up

Rails fastened to the posts, pickets hung straight and even, gates built and hung with hinges sized for them. We haul away the debris and walk the fence with you.

For a new fence we need each straight run in feet (A, B, C), the height and style, and where the gates go. Close is fine: we confirm the exact sizes on site after you say yes.

The HOA, the county and 811

Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence goes up. Most want a plan with the fence line, the height, the style and the gate, and some only allow certain styles or colors. Ask early and get the yes in writing before the first post is set. We help with the drawing. Read our HOA fence approval guide.

Permits, setbacks and the height you may build to depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811, so the gas, water and cable lines are marked for free.

The per-foot price, the gate prices and a worked example are in the fence cost per foot guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a new wood fence cost?
A new wood fence is $35 to $42 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Send photos of the yard, the rough length of each run, the height and the style you want, and we send a free written quote. What moves the price: total length, height, the style, the number of gates, corners, slope and whether an old fence has to come out first.
Pine or cedar?
Pressure-treated pine costs less and takes stain well. Cedar costs more, resists rot and insects on its own, and weathers to silver if you leave it bare. For either one we use ground-contact rated treated pine for the posts, because the post base is where a wood fence fails first in our clay.
How deep do you set the posts?
Deep enough for the height of the fence and the soil at your address, with gravel at the bottom of the hole so the post end drains and concrete crowned at the top so water runs off. A taller fence or a loose soil needs more post in the ground. We tell you the plan in the quote.
Do I need HOA approval or a permit?
Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence, and most ask for a plan with the fence line, height, style and gate. We help with that drawing. Permits, setbacks and the allowed height depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811 so the utilities are marked for free.
Should I stain the new fence?
Let treated pine dry out for a few months first, then stain or seal it. Cedar can be left bare or sealed to keep its color. A fence that is sealed every few years outlasts the same fence left bare. Staining is quoted separately if you ask for it.
Can you replace only part of my old fence with new?
Yes. If a section is past saving and the rest is sound, we rebuild that section on new posts to match the rest. That is a repair job, $225 to $600 per repair visit, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. If more of the fence is bad, we tell you in the quote where the line between repair and a new fence falls.
