What Huntersville does to a fence

Huntersville went from farmland to subdivisions in a couple of decades, and the fences went in with the houses. Birkdale, the neighborhoods off Gilead Road and Beatties Ford Road, and the streets toward the lake are full of fences that are the same age as each other. That means they wear out at the same time, which is why a whole street starts asking about fence repair in the same season.

The ground is red clay. A wood post that sits in clay with no gravel under it is standing in water after every rain, and it rots at the ground line years before the boards go. Vinyl and aluminum posts do not rot, which is one reason the HOAs here like them, but they still need a footing that holds, and a vinyl post set in a shallow hole leans just like a wood one.

Because we are about an hour away, Huntersville is a larger-project town for us: storm damage across several sections, a row of posts to reset along a long run, or a new fence. A single picket is not a trip we can make work for either of us, and we say so.

Larger projects, about an hour out

A new fence, a storm rebuild or a long run of post replacements is worth the drive. We bundle everything into one or two visits and put the work days in the written quote.

HOA styles, matched

Send a photo of an approved fence on your street along with your own. We quote that style in that color and help with the drawing for the HOA form.

Permits, setbacks and HOA approval in Huntersville

The Town of Huntersville handles its own zoning, which sets how tall a fence can be and how far from the street and the side lines it sits. Mecklenburg County handles building permits and inspections. A repair that keeps the same fence in the same place usually needs nothing. A new fence usually needs a zoning check with the town. They have the final word.

Nearly every subdivision here has an HOA, and nearly every HOA wants to approve a new fence before it goes up. Many also want to see a repair that changes the look. The form usually asks for a plan with the fence line, height, style, color and gate. So check with your HOA first, get the yes in writing, and we help with the drawing. Our HOA fence guide walks through it.

Before we dig for a new fence we call 811, so the gas, water, cable and irrigation lines are marked for free. Newer subdivisions have a lot of lines close to the lot line, so we wait for the marks.

Prices and how it works

  • Fence, gate and storm repairs: $225 to $600 per repair visit
  • New wood, vinyl and aluminum fences: see the cost page for the per-foot ranges

Every price is installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. In Huntersville we quote several repairs as one visit, so a larger job carries the drive. See what moves the price on our fence cost page.

Text us two or three photos and the rough sizes, or upload them here, and we send a free written quote. After you say yes, we confirm the exact sizes on site as part of the job. No free visit to quote. The work day is usually 6 to 10 days after you accept the quote, and it goes in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Huntersville is a long way from Waxhaw. Will you come for one broken board?
Honestly, probably not, and we would rather say so than drive an hour and charge you for it. We take larger fence projects in Huntersville: a storm that took down several sections, a long run of posts to replace, or a new fence. Send the photos either way. If the job is small, we tell you straight, and you can find someone closer.
Our HOA wants the new fence to match the neighbors. Can you do that?
Yes. Most of the subdivisions around Birkdale and off Gilead Road allow only certain styles and colors, often white or tan vinyl, black aluminum, or a specific wood design. Take a photo of a neighbor's approved fence and send it with yours. We quote the same style, and we help with the drawing the HOA form asks for.
The fence posts in our subdivision are all failing at the same time. Why?
Because they went into the same red clay in the same year. Clay holds water against the post, and a post set shallow or without gravel under it rots at the ground line on a schedule. When several neighbors see it at once, that is the whole street reaching the same age. A rebuild with posts set right lasts longer than the first fence did.
Do I need a permit from the Town of Huntersville for a fence?
The town handles zoning, which sets height and setback rules, and Mecklenburg County handles building permits. A new fence usually needs a zoning check with the town; a repair that keeps the same fence usually needs nothing. They have the final word, so call before you plan.
