Where vinyl makes sense

Vinyl is for the owner who does not want to stain a fence every few years, or watch a wood fence go gray and splinter. It does not rot, it does not feed termites, and it washes with a hose.

It is also what many planned neighborhoods already have, so a vinyl fence matches the street. White privacy with a cap rail is the common pick; tan and gray blend better with brick and stone.

Where it is weaker: a hard impact on a cold day can crack a panel, it is harder to change later, and the first cost is higher than treated pine. Compare the three materials in wood vs vinyl vs aluminum.

The three materials we quote. Wood gives the most looks for the money and needs care; vinyl and aluminum never need paint; aluminum is open, so it is for looks, pets and pools, not privacy.

Vinyl styles

The same four jobs a wood fence does, without the wood.

Privacy

Tongue and groove boards that lock together into a solid panel, usually 6 feet tall, with a cap rail. No gaps, no screws showing.

Semi-private

A privacy panel with a lattice or spindle top, for light and air without giving up the yard. The style many HOAs prefer along a street.

Picket

Spaced pickets, 3 to 4 feet, with dog-ear or pointed caps. The classic white front-yard fence, without the yearly paint.

Ranch rail

Two or three wide rails between posts on a large lot. Wire mesh can be added inside for a dog.

Vinyl fence pricing

A new vinyl fence is $69 to $76 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Your written quote comes from your photos and the layout.

Length and height

Longer runs cost less per foot. A 6 foot privacy panel costs more than a 4 foot picket panel.

Style and color

Solid privacy and lattice-top panels cost more than picket. Tan, gray and wood-grain cost more than white.

Gates and corners

Each gate needs reinforced posts and vinyl-rated hardware. Each corner and each end needs its own post.

The site

Slope means stepped or racked panels. Roots, rock, a tight side yard and removing an old fence all add work.

North Carolina projects of $40,000 or more are contracted through our licensed general contractor partner. South Carolina projects over $5,000 go through our licensed partner too. See the cost page.

How a new vinyl fence goes

1

Send photos and the layout for a free written quote

A few photos of the yard, the rough length of each run, the height, the style and color, and where the gates go. We send a written quote with the exact product named.

2

HOA yes, 811 marked, exact sizes confirmed

You get the HOA approval in writing, we help with the drawing. We call 811 so the utilities are marked. On the first work day we confirm the exact sizes and the line on site.

3

Posts set in concrete, panels locked in

Post sleeves set plumb in concrete, inserts where the fence or the gate needs them, then the rails and pickets locked into the posts in a straight line.

4

Gates, caps, clean-up

Gates hung on their own reinforced posts with hinges and latches made for vinyl, post caps on, debris hauled away. We walk the fence with you.

The top of the concrete is rounded so water runs away from the post.Depth below grounddepends on height and soilConcrete crownedso water runs offGravel at the bottomso the post end drainsGround-contact posttreated for burial
A vinyl post is a sleeve set in concrete the same way as a wood post: gravel under it so it drains, concrete crowned so water runs off. Gate posts and tall runs get an insert for stiffness.

The HOA, the county and 811

The per-foot price, the gate price and a worked example for a 150-foot yard are in the fence cost per foot guide.

Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence goes up, and vinyl is where the color rules bite: most allow white, some allow tan, few allow anything else. Ask early, get the yes in writing before the first post is set. We help with the drawing. Read our HOA fence approval guide.

Permits, setbacks and the height you may build to depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811, so the gas, water and cable lines are marked for free.

Pool barriers have their own rules on height, gaps and self-closing gates that differ by town. For a frameless glass pool fence, see our sister company Carolina Glass Railing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a vinyl fence cost?
A new vinyl fence is $69 to $76 per linear foot, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Vinyl costs more than treated pine up front and nothing in paint or stain after. Send photos of the yard, the rough length of each run, the height and the style, and we send a free written quote.
Does vinyl crack in the cold or yellow in the sun?
Fence-grade vinyl has UV protection mixed in, so a good product keeps its color for years, though a cheap one can chalk. Vinyl gets stiffer in cold weather, and a hard hit on a cold day can crack a panel; a hit on a warm day usually just bounces. A cracked panel or picket is replaced on its own, the rest of the fence stays.
Which colors can I get?
White is the most common and what most HOAs allow. Tan, gray and wood-grain finishes exist too. Ask your HOA which colors and styles they accept before you choose, and we put the exact product in the quote.
How are vinyl posts set?
A vinyl post is a hollow sleeve. It is set in concrete like a wood post, and on taller fences and gate posts it gets a metal or wood insert for stiffness. The rails lock into slots in the posts, so there are no screws through the face of the fence.
Do I need HOA approval or a permit?
Many HOAs in Union County and York County require approval before a new fence, and most ask for a plan with the fence line, height, style and gate. We help with that drawing. Permits, setbacks and the allowed height depend on your county or town, and they have the final word. Before we dig we call 811 so the utilities are marked for free.
Can you repair my existing vinyl fence instead?
Yes. A broken picket, a rail that popped out of its post, or a post that leans is a repair visit, $225 to $600, installed, plus tax, confirmed after the final measure. Send a photo of the damage and a close-up of a rail end so we can match the profile.
